"While COVID-19 has radically transformed every aspect of contemporary life, it is the face mask that has perhaps become its starkest symbol. And beneath this new accessory lies a moist, miasmic, breeding ground for tensions around questions of identity, liberty, race and above all the problem of collective action. We discuss why the mask has become the site of such intense conflict and ask if the solidaristic gesture of mask wearing might engender a communitarian impulse in otherwise individualist societies."
